Utilizing small spaces while living in the city is essential. Get balcony design ideas from our design editor Joel Bray and learn how he gave his small condo balcony an upscale, Manhattan-penthouse vibe.

After living in his condo for two summers, Joel felt it was time to transform his concrete-heavy balcony into an urban city garden. He started with the floors and chose semi-permanent slate tiles in a grey-blue hue, which set the tone for the rest of the colours in the space. A trellis with a matching mirror, painted in Farrow & Ball’s Hague Blue, divides the balcony from his neighbours, while an awning disguises the concrete ceiling. Other decorative features include a marble top table, which really elevates the space, a mini bar, a concrete urn and year-round cedar plants.
