How to Survive Lake Natron
00:06:21
scout
1 Views · 3 years ago

Located in a remote region of Tanzania, in East Africa, Lake Natron is one of the most toxic places on Earth. Part of its toxicity is caused by the Ol Doinyo Lengai volcano, located on the lake’s southern coast. This active volcano expels a strange magma that's rich in sodium and potassium carbonate. It's known as natrocarbonatite, or natron. The magma flows into the water, making it extremely alkaline. And the desert's salty rain soaks into it. Unlike other lakes, Lake Natron’s water doesn’t run to the sea or other streams. Instead, it evaporates, and the sodium stays behind. This increases the lake's salinity, making it even more lethal. Most animals can’t survive these corrosive waters. If they fall in, they could die before touching the bottom of the lake.

How to Survive the Traps of Home Alone

Could you survive a paint can smashing your face at 32 km/h (20 mph)? How about a blow torch to the head? Or an iron to the skull? These are just some of the sadistic traps that make up the massively popular holiday film "Home Alone". Audiences could not get enough of seeing eight-year-old Kevin torture the burglars that tried to rob his family home. But they also couldn't help but think, how many of these traps would realistically kill the burglars? Would a helmet be enough to keep them safe? And why should they have been vaccinated before entering the house? And today, we're putting them to the test. If these traps existed in real life, would they still result in hillarious slapstick or would they leave a trail of bodies?

MUSIC: http://share.epidemicsound.com/iltms

Josh's wife is really into gardening and planting beautiful greenery leading to her desire for a greenhouse. This way, she can keep her plants alive during the winter months and incubate some new plants so they're ready for the spring.

Josh began the design with a 3d model in Fusion 360. We got our bill of materials and the cut list then headed to our local Lowe's to get the supplies to begin framing the structure. I chose to use pressure treated lumber for this exterior addition to resist the moisture and humidity that may build up inside the greenhouse. Using Josh's measurements, we nailed together the floor and added the front and back wall studs.

Before adding a structure to your yard, you may chose to grate and level the area beforehand. Josh didn't want to tear up the yard, and here in Kentucky, the clay is super hard. In lieu of digging into the ground to level it, we chose to level the floor frame by adding 2x4 posts semi-driven into the ground. This way, Josh and i could level the floor and nail it to those posts along the span of the greenhouse. Now that we had a level surface to work from, we continued to build out the frame by connecting the front and back studs and then connecting those two walls with some ceiling joists.

For the greenhouse floor, Josh wanted something that could resist any standing water that would fall down from the plants. We found some engineered siding panels at Lowe's that are weather-resistant and come in large, 4' x 8' sheets. These panels are only 3/8" thick, so we added another layer of pressure treated 1/2" plywood to ensure the floor was strong enough to walk on. We fit three of these double-layered panels on top of the floor frame, making sure to cut around the wall studs and secured them with screws.

For the greenhouse's exterior, it is possible to simply cover the bare frame with the clear polycarbonate sheets, but because of this greenhouse's size, that would take more than the 10 panels we allotted for this project. We had to order the sheets from Lowes.com and the came in a pack of 10. So rather than sacrificing the size of the greenhouse, Josh got creative and added a decorative element to the outside that helped use less polycarbonate.

We decided to use the cutoffs of the engineered, exterior sheeting to make a skirting of wood panels that wrapped around the greenhouse. To cover any seams and to give the element some definition, Josh cut up some 1x4 trim pieces that really set the decorative element apart. It looked really nice and flowed super well with the overall design. Again, these step is optional, but it does look fantastic and it helps save on the more expensive material later.

At this point in the project, we have a nice looking frame of a greenhouse. To make it functional as a greenhouse, we need a way to trap the radiant heat from the sun inside the structure. We found many ways to do this from using reclaimed windows, rolls of plastic tarp pulled tight, glass panes, and sheets of acrylic.

How to DIY Easy Geode Cookies | Eat the Trend
00:03:32
scout
4 Views · 3 years ago

We have been falling in love with the geode trend in desserts for a while, but most of the geode cookies we saw out there require a ton of frosting technique and we wanted to make these foolproof. So we have an easy slice-and-bake version that will give you the gorgeous designs you want without all of the work. Enjoy!

Geode Cookies
From Skylar Thomson, POPSUGAR Food

For the cookies:
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1/8 tsp. fine salt
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1/4 cup granulated sugar
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, chilled
1 tsp. clear vanilla extract
1/2 tsp. lemon juice
1 egg white
Teal and violet gel food coloring
White sparkling sugar

For the glaze:
1 tbsp. plus two tsp. of vodka
1 tbsp. of corn syrup
1/2 tbsp. of gray luster dust

Place flour, salt, powdered sugar, granulated sugar, and baking powder into a food processor and pulse until combined. Add cold butter in batches and pulse until it achieves a sand-like texture.
Add the vanilla, lemon juice, and egg white and pulse until the mixture forms a ball.
Remove half of the mixture, form it into a disk, wrap it in plastic wrap, and chill for about 20 minutes until firm.
Add a pea-sized amount of each gel food coloring to the remaining dough in the remaining dough in the food processor and pulse until just combined. The dough should look swirled like marble. Be careful not to overmix the dough at this point.
Form the marbled dough into a disc, wrap in plastic wrap, and chill for at least 20 minutes until firm.
Remove dough from the refrigerator and divide both discs in half, leaving you with 4 sections of dough. Roll the 2 colored sections into a 12x5 inch rectangle, about ¼ inch thick, and set aside. Repeat with half of the plain dough.
With the remaining half of the plain dough, form a log about 1 inch thick and 12 inches long and set aside. Beginning with a colored layer, stack the rolled-out dough rectangles on top of each other, brushing each layer lightly with water to help them stick. Once you have a stack of the 3 doughs, colored, plain, colored, then place the plain dough log in the center lengthwise.
Working lengthwise, roll the dough sheets over the plain dough log and pinch the dough together along the seam to form an imperfect log. The imperfections in shape will create a more realistic look. Place the log in the freezer for about 1 hour.
Preheat oven to 325ºF and line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper. Slice the log into ¼-inch sections. Roll the edges of each cookie in sanding sugar and place on prepared baking sheet. Press more sanding sugar into the center of each cookie to create a rocky effect.
Bake the cookies for about 15-20 minutes or until just slightly golden and firm. Let cool.
While the cookies cool, combine the corn syrup and 2 tsp. of vodka until corn syrup is dissolved. Once the cookies are cooled, using a pastry brush, brush each geode cookie with the glaze and let set.
Combine the remaining vodka and luster dust in another small bowl and brush the edges of each cookie. Let both glazes dry.
Cookies can be stored in an airtight container for up to 3 days! Enjoy!

An Orgeat hack is a quick, simple and clean way to whip up a 500mL batch of almond syrup for your tiki cocktails. Mai Tai anyone?

How to DIY 5-in-1 Kawaii Egg Polymer Clay/Resin Tutorial

Hey everyone! Today I have a how to make/craft/DIY these cute little eggs. This video is a five in one ( 5 in 1) tutorial on how to make a hard boiled, frieds, raw, regular, and cracked egg out of polymer clay and uv resin.

You will need polymer clay: an oven bake clay that hardens once baked according to instructions. Commons brands I use are fimo, sculpey and premo. Bought from Michaels, Hobby Lobby or Joanns or Amazon. Air dry clay works just as well.

Resin: a compound that is time curing into a hardened plastic material. I used UV resin, but you may also use 2 Part resin. Link to UV resin here: http://bit.ly/2j9mnn8 and look up “UV resin”. UV resin requires curing in direct sunlight or under a UV lamp, I use a UV lamp used for nails/nail art.
