A martial artist joins a hard-hitting gunfighter in the search for treasure while bandits step into their way.

The king of the spaghetti westerns that isnโt Clint Eastwood teams up with the king of kung fu movies that isnโt Bruce Lee. Sure, that sounds like a diss but I am a pretty big fan of Lee Van Cleef and Lo Lieh. Both men owned the 1970s in their own way, so seeing them come together is pretty interesting. Sadly though, their talents and their team-up were wasted in this picture, which just doesnโt live up to whatever hype my mind might have had in the โ70s when this actually went down. The filmโs premise is pretty interesting though. Ho Chiang (Lo Lieh) journeys to America from China in search of his uncleโs fortune. He discovers that his uncle is dead and the only man that knows where his body is, is the one accused of murdering him, an Old West gunslinger named Dakota (Lee Van Cleef). Once the uncleโs body is found, the pair find clues that point to the fortune. This then becomes a real spaghetti western treasure hunting movie with kung fu flair. The reluctant pair must track down the uncleโs mistresses, each of whom have a section of the treasure map tattooed on their bums. Ultimately, the two men become friends and kick a lot of as*s. The problem with the movie is that the execution is poor and really kind of lazy. Van Cleef and Lieh are both solid but the script just isnโt there and everything is fairly pedestrian. This is a film that is an example of wasted potential. But then again, a studio specializing in spaghetti westerns didnโt have much experience creating kung fu pictures just as Shaw Brothers, even with their input on kung fu filmmaking, didnโt know how to make westerns. And really, Iโm not sure how much input Shaw Brothers actually had, it seems pretty minuscule.

"Death Rides a Horse is one that Spaghetti Western fans (and fans of Lee Van Cleef) would thoroughly enjoy. The FILM is most watchable (read below about the DVD and possible hopes for a Region 1 letterbox DVD release), and Van Cleef is at his best in this one, playing a thug who is betrayed by his com padres. We usually see him playing the ultimate bad guy in most of his films, with his knife-deep stare filling the screen. At times, though, Van Cleef exposes his compassionate side for just a tease, and then just as quickly masks his inner humanity behind The Stare, as he plays Ryan, who arm-wrestles throughout the movie with stubborn youngster Bill (John Phillip Law), who has forsaken his lady and his life by embracing only revenge - and a single spur - after watching his father murdered, only to then bear witness to his mother and older sister brutalized at the hands of an out-of-control g*ng, greedy for gold.
The match-up between Ryan and Bill is one that plays itself out quite well, as Ryan acts as surrogate father, dishing out advice through some memorable quotes, teaching young Bill with his words and actions. Bill's anger is worn heavily on his sleeve, while Ryan steadily and calmly works out his own dishes of revenge, suppressing his anger even better than his empathy for Bill, which he touches on even as the pair first meet. Phillip Law was okay, but not thoroughly convincing as a bitter young man who witnessed his family's killing. Every once in a while, he might could have done just another take or two, but it's an easy pill to swallow since Van Cleef balances him out.
I wouldn't want to go deeper into reviewing the movie, except that there's a nice plot twist somewhere inside the film. Many of the actors seen in this 1968 film have been in films by the great Sergio Leone. It seems that there was a core of actors who performed in a number of Italian Westerns, and for good reason: the chemistry was there. Add a good dose of Ennio Morricone film scores, and you have the potential for a quite watchable film. Most spaghetti's would be overcooked and unpalatable if not for Morricone music, which acts as an unseen, yet incredibly talented main character.
Once in a while, the dialog (like Bill's off-balance delivery: "I'll find out who he is. If he is who I think he is...get ready to get mad") detracts from the slow and steady pace of Death Rides a Horse (that line makes me want to Kill Bill, myself), but the overall storyline works well enough to entertain Spaghetti Western fans. There are very few plot holes to pick at in the film, which has an air of dread or darkness throughout much of its length. A lighter moment always seems to pop in just when the viewer might like to come up for air (like a character who offers Bill a kiss).
For those concerned about bad or unbelievable endings, Death Rides delivers without disappointment. " Written by EyeDunno

Hall and son provide us this time with an earnest effort towards legitimate film making. Hall Jr. is the youngster mistaken for Billy the Kid-and shows glimpses(as he did in the "Sadist")of real acting ability. Unfortunately, this one comes along about a decade too late to ride the crest of popularity that low-budget westerns once enjoyed. Sadly(?) this was Arch Hall Jr.'s screen Swan Song.

"I agree that this TV Western is worth your time. Ernest Borgnine and Sammy Davis Jr play well together. Watch fast for a young William Katt as Borgnine's son. The character of El Grande is played by the excellent Gary Marshal of Camelot (1967) and The Thousand Plane Rain (1968, released July 1969). In this production he is credited as 'Caleb Brooks'. though I do not know why. His performance is memorable and it is a shame he did not do more work on film. His career has been mostly on the stage where his considerable vocal talents have been wowing audiences for many years. Fans also remember him fondly in three episodes of Marlo Thomas' That Girl series playing British Photographer Noel Prince. He can also be viewed in the Vegas (1979) episode 'Lost Monday' as Dr Middleton as well as a cameo in George Clooney's Intolerable Cruelty. Back to the film...I have always enjoyed the music in this production and the script is above average. I can see how it would have made for an entertaining feature film." "Big name stars with excellent acting in this movie all add to the enjoyment of the search. Fast moving action and a couple of scenes with the heroes getting the upper hand make the movie go by too quickly. Ernie Borgnine and Sammy Davis, Jr. make a great team. Sammy's character's laid-back personality is an exciting contrast to some of the other characters' impatience and prejudice which make you keep on watching. I watched this movie twice tonight to make sure I didn't miss anything - I give it a 10 as I feel each character gave so much strength to the overall picture. Jim Davis and Julie Adams are very talented, seasoned actors and Bucklind Noah Beery was a surprise to me as I never knew Noah Berry, Jr. had a son. Storyline:
Glenn Saxon is El Desperado, a masked avenger who rights wrongs done to Mexicans by bandits and by the rich elitists in southern California.
His real name is Manuel Lopez, and he also has his own score to settle. When he was young, bandits attacked his parentsโ hacienda. He was the lone survivor. Now heโs vowed to get even with the five men responsible.
One of those men is a notorious outlaw named Blackie Stark (Massimo Serato). In fact, he led the raid on the Lopez family.
But the man behind that raid was Judge Wilkins (Beni Deus), who wound up making a fortune off the Lopez land.
Heโs now determined to make sure that fortune stays in the Wilkins family by having pretty daughter Evelyn (Barbara Loy) marry her cousin William, whoโs every bit as racist against Mexicans as his father.
It matters not that Evelyn despises William. It matters not that the judgeโs wife Corrine intervenes on her daughterโs behalf. The judge has gained power, not heโs hellbent on preserving it.
Meanwhile, Evelyn remembers happier days with a childhood friend named Manuel Lopez. And when a dress maker named Pedro Madero shows up, she has no idea heโs re-entered her life.
Itโs really El Desperado, of course, plotting his next move before warning those responsible for his parentsโ death that he intends to see they pay for their crimes.

That cast includes Luis Induni, a fair sheriff caught between the judge and El Desperado; Jose and Carmen Perera, friends of El Desperado who might pay a high price for that friendship; and Estella, a saloon owner who canโt help loving William though heโs promised to another woman and is prone to chase any other pretty skirt who shows up in town.
